maxill u•tests BIs contain bacterial spores (Geobacillus stearothermophilus) on filter paper within a specially designed dual-wall ampule. The unique design and culture medium create a system allowing each BI to be used as a "spore test" or "positive control." The dramatic color change identifies bacterial spore growth and allows you to easily identify a failed sterilization process.
Biological indicators are the most recognized method for sterilization control as they directly evaluate the efficacy of the procedure to destroy the most resistant type of microorganisms, namely bacterial spores. The bacterial spores used, G. stearothermophilus, are more resistant and present in higher numbers than common microbial contaminants encountered in the dental office. Thus, an inactivated biological indicator means that other microorganisms that have undergone the same process have indeed been destroyed, thereby confirming sterilization.
Incubation period: 24 hours.
